UN Sustainable Development Goals

Goal #3: Good Health and Well-being

Each academic year, Horris Hill School selects one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to focus on, with the goal chosen through a democratic vote by the children. This process teaches them about the electoral system, empowering them to engage in the democratic process and exercise their future right to vote. It also fosters an understanding of the importance of active citizenship and decision-making.

Once selected, the goal is embedded across the curriculum, both inside and outside the classroom. This includes talks, workshops, and hands-on projects, providing the children with real-world learning opportunities. The goal for the 2024/25 school year is SDG #3 – Good Health and Well-being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Focusing on this goal will help our pupils explore the importance of physical and mental health, wellness, and how they can contribute to creating healthier communities.

In line with Horris Hill tradition, outdoor learning is a key part of our approach. Our 65-acre grounds in the Hampshire countryside, including the Kitchen Garden, school woods, and rewilding areas, offer students a chance to learn through nature. They are encouraged to take the lead in outdoor activities, fostering independence, confidence, and a greater understanding of the environment. Whether learning about biodiversity, tending to the garden, or exploring sustainability, Horris Hill children develop a deeper connection to nature and a sense of responsibility for the planet.

Through this approach, we aim to nurture pupil well-being, while encouraging them to be thoughtful, responsible, and engaged global citizens.

2023/24

For the 2023/24 academic year, Horris Hill School focused on SDG #14 – Life Below Water: "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources." Our children engaged in learning about ocean conservation, marine biodiversity, and sustainability, taking part in activities that raised awareness about protecting marine ecosystems and their importance for sustained life on Earth.
